SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its first home match in nearly a month, Cal Poly women's tennis suffered a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
For the 11th time this season, the Mustangs opened the match by grabbing the doubles point. Graduate student Kim Bhunu and freshman Kennedy Buntrock rolled to a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot to secure their third straight win and improve to 9-5 as a pairing this season.
Then redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle and sophomore Peyton Dunkle (pictured above) fended off the Titans' No. 1 doubles pairing, earning a 7-5 win to secure the doubles point and move to 10-6 on the season.
In singles, Cal State Fullerton (13-6, 5-2 Big West) won at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 to take a 3-1 lead, but the Mustangs didn't go down without a fight.
After losing the first set in her match at No. 5, Buntrock mounted a furious rally only dropping four games over the second and third sets to complete a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 comeback victory.
Peyton Dunkle picked up her third consecutive singles victory at the No. 4 spot, outlasting her opponent 7-5, 7-5 in a tightly-contested match to even the dual at 3-3.
It all came down to court No. 2 and redshirt junior Melissa LaMette left it all on the court. After dropping the first set, she battled back to win the second 7-5. However, she was unable to complete the comeback and the Titans grabbed the dual win.
The Mustangs (10-8, 4-3 Big West) will look to get back on track when they take on UC Irvine at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in their home finale. Following the match at the Mustang Tennis Complex, the team will honor its lone senior, Kim Bhunu.
