SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Riding a three-match winning streak, Cal Poly women's tennis is set to host its final two home duals of the season this weekend at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (10-7) will battle a pair of Big West foes with Cal State Fullerton up first at 11 a.m. Saturday. Then at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Cal Poly wraps up its 2023 home schedule against UC Irvine. Following Sunday's dual against the Anteaters, the program will honor its lone senior, Kim Bhunu.
Live scoring will be available for both matches and links can found on the women's tennis schedule page on GoPoly.com. You can also follow Cal Poly women's tennis on Twitter (@CalPolyWTennis) for updates throughout both matches.
Both matches this weekend will be pivotal in determining seeding for the Big West Championships. With a 4-2 Big West record, Cal Poly currently sits in a three-way tie for third in the conference standings with CSUN and Cal State Fullerton with three Big West matches left. CSUN owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Mustangs after defeating Cal Poly 4-3 in a tightly-contested battle on Feb. 18.
This past week, the Mustangs improved to 6-3 in true road matches, defeating Pacific 4-2 and most recently UC Davis 4-3. In Saturday's victory at the Aggies, Bhunu, Melissa LaMette, Peyton Dunkle and Alexandra Ozerets all won their singles matches in straight sets to propel Cal Poly to its ninth win in its last 11 matches.
Bhunu, who is 9-6 while playing at the No. 1 spot this spring, owns an 8-2 record over her last 11 singles matches and is a perfect 6-0 in Big West play. Bhunu went undefeated in singles and doubles this past week to win Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the third time in her career. She also earned her first two career singles victories over ranked opponents earlier this season, defeating Harvard's Charlotte Owensby, ranked No. 82 at the time, on March 16 and Hawai'i's Ana Vilcek, ranked 107th at the time, on March 30.
Bhunu and her doubles partner, freshman Kennedy Buntrock, are 8-5 at the No. 2 spot this spring.
Ozerets hasn't played like a freshman this season as she is a team-best 11-3 in singles, including 5-1 in Big West play. A 6-3, 6-2 victory against UC Davis allowed Ozerets to secure her third straight win and improve to 4-0 at the No. 6 spot this season.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle own a 9-6 record and last Friday the duo took down Pacific's Klara Kosan and Karina Chao, the 32nd-ranked doubles pairing in the nation at the time. In singles, Peyton Dunkle is 6-1 at the No. 4 spot this season.
The victory over UC Davis also allowed Cal Poly to secure 10 wins for the third consecutive season, their longest streak since posting five straight 10+ win seasons from 2008-12.
SCOUTING THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton (12-6) is fresh off a 4-3 victory at CSUN this past Saturday, helping them bounce back from a 4-2 home loss to Long Beach State on April 7 that ended a five-match winning streak. The victory also allowed the Titans to improve to 4-2 in Big West play. Cal Poly, who beat the Titans 4-2 in Fullerton last season when they were ranked No. 64 in the country, is seeking its third straight victory over the Titans on Saturday. In 2021, the Mustangs swept Cal State Fullerton 4-0 in the semifinals of the Big West tournament to advance to the championship match.
SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS: UC Irvine (9-4, 2-3 Big West) grabbed its first conference victory on April 6, downing UC Riverside 6-1, and then secured a 4-3 home victory over UC San Diego on Saturday, April 8. The Anteaters, who have won their last five duals, will face Westmont on Friday and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday before arriving in San Luis Obispo for Sunday's match. Cal Poly has swept UC Irvine 7-0 in back-to-back years and is looking for its sixth straight victory over the Anteaters this weekend.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly hits the road for its final regular season match to face rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m.
