Cal Poly Crushes Anteaters on Senior Day

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's tennis dominated UC Irvine in its home finale Sunday, cruising to a 6-1 victory over the Anteaters at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 11-8 on the season and 5-3 in Big West play. With one match left, Cal Poly currently sits in fifth in the conference standings.
Following the match, the program honored its lone senior, Kim Bhunu. The Harare, Zimbabwe native has certainly left her mark in her five years as a Mustang, and the team made sure to send the two-time All-Big West First Team doubles selection out on a high note in her final home match.
For the 12th time this season, Cal Poly secured the doubles point. Redshirt junior Melissa LaMette and freshman Sarah MacCallum took care of business first, downing their doubles foe at the No. 3 spot 6-4 to grab their second win as a pairing this season.
Redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle and sophomore Peyton Dunkle clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs for the second consecutive match with a 7-5 victory at No. 1. The Dunkles are a team-best 11-6 on the season.
Bhunu and freshman Kennedy Buntrock were leading their match at the No. 2 spot 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched.
The Mustangs silenced the Anteaters in singles play as Bhunu (No. 1), Peyton (No. 3), Delanie (No. 4) and freshman Alexandra Ozerets (No. 6) all won in straight sets. Peyton clinched the dual victory with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win to up her winning streak to four consecutive matches and move to 9-6 this spring. Bhunu is now 7-1 in Big West singles matches, while Ozerets improved to 12-4 and 5-1 at No. 6.
Buntrock won the first set in her match at No. 5 6-0 before her opponent retired.
Cal Poly nearly blanked the Anteaters as LaMette got into a back-and-forth battle at the No. 2 spot for the second straight dual. Unfortunately, LaMette came up just short in a super tiebreaker, 10-7.
The Mustangs, winners of 10 of their last 13 matches, head to rival UC Santa Barbara this coming Saturday for an 11 a.m. match to wrap up regular season play. Cal Poly and the Gauchos have faced off in the last two championship matches in the Big West tournament.
