SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — In its regular season finale Saturday, Cal Poly women's tennis secured a dramatic 4-3 victory at UC Santa Barbara thanks to a pair of nail-biting straight-set singles victories from Peyton Dunkle (pictured above) and Delanie Dunkle.
The win allowed the Mustangs (12-8, 6-3 Big West) to finish in a five-way tie for second place in the conference regular season standings with UCSB, CSUN, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. However based on tiebreaker scenarios, Cal Poly secured the No. 2 seed in the Big West Championships and will face seventh-seeded UC Davis (8-13, 3-6 Big West) in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships at 9 a.m. Thursday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Saturday's match against the Gauchos all came down to the No. 3 singles spot with the dual tied at 3-3. Peyton Dunkle rolled to a 6-3 first-set victory, but in the second she went back and forth with UCSB's Kira Reuter. But just like she has all season, the sophomore found a way to get it done in crunch time, earning a dramatic 8-6 second-set tiebreaker victory to clinch Cal Poly's first win at UCSB since 2011. It was also the Mustangs' first victory against the Gauchos overall since defeating them 4-3 at the Mustang Tennis Complex on April 12, 2014.
This is the third time Peyton Dunkle has clinched a match for the Mustangs this season. She has now won her last five singles matches that have finished and is 10-6 on the season.
Delanie Dunkle also secured a hard-fought singles victory, downing her opponent at No. 4 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to knot the dual at 3-3.
Freshmen Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets picked up the Mustangs' first two match points, making quick work of their opponents in singles. Buntrock won her third straight match at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-1, while Ozerets emerged victorious at No. 6 6-2, 6-2. With the victory, Ozerets finished with a 7-2 record in conference matches this season and improved to a team-best 13-4, tied with seven others for the 20th-most singles victories in duals in a season in program history.
The Mustangs dropped the doubles point to the Gauchos, but graduate student Kim Bhunu and Buntrock were able to grab their fourth consecutive victory at the No. 2 spot, downing their opponent 6-4 to improve to 10-5 as a doubles pairing.
