SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Second-seeded Cal Poly women's tennis swept seventh-seeded UC Davis 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships on Thursday, punching its ticket to the semifinals for the third consecutive year.
The Mustangs (13-8) will face No. 6 seed CSUN (17-5) in the Big West semifinals at noon Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Cal Poly rolled past the Aggies in its opening match at the tournament, securing its fifth straight victory over UC Davis.
The Mustangs secured the doubles point for the 13th time this season. At No. 1, Delanie Dunkle (pictured above) and Peyton Dunkle cruised to a 6-1 win to improve their record to 12-7. Then at No. 2, Kim Bhunu and Kennedy Buntrock clinched the doubles point for Cal Poly with a 6-4 victory to move to 11-5 on the season and capture their fifth straight win as a doubles pairing.
Melissa LaMette and Alexandra Ozerets were leading their match at No. 3 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched.
"We got off to a great start in doubles … that gave us some good momentum going into singles," head coach Ellie Edles Williams said after the match. "We lost the doubles point to them during the regular season, so just getting a head start there and going up 1-0 going into singles was huge for us."
In singles, Delanie dismantled her opponent at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-0 to grab her third straight win and give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
"I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do," Delanie said about her singles victory, "and it was really great because all the energy from my teammates around me just really helped me that much more."
Peyton continued her recent tear in singles, downing the Aggies' Michelle Zell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to pick up her sixth consecutive victory. She is now 11-6 on the season.
With Cal Poly holding a 3-0 advantage, Ozerets shut the door on any hopes of a UC Davis comeback and clinched the Mustangs' third straight dual victory. She took down her opponent at the No. 6 spot 6-2, 7-5 to improve to a team-best 14-4 this spring, tied with five others for the 15th-most dual singles victories in a season in program history.
Cal Poly will be seeking its third straight appearance in the Big West Championship match when they battle the Matadors on Friday. In their regular season matchup, the Mustangs came up just short to CSUN 4-3 in a hard-fought dual at the Mustang Tennis Complex. The Matadors defeated No. 3 seed UCSB 4-2 on Thursday to reach the semifinals.
