SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Mustangs will play for a championship on Saturday.
Cal Poly women's tennis blanked sixth-seeded CSUN 4-0 in the semifinals of the Big West Championships on Friday to secure a spot in the championship match for the third consecutive year.
The second-seeded Mustangs (14-8) face No. 1 seed Hawai'i (13-7) in the Big West Championship at noon Saturday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Cal Poly avenged a 4-3 home defeat to the Matadors (17-6) during the regular season to reach its fifth Big West title match in program history.
"That was a huge win for us after losing to them in the regular season, we knew it was going to be a battle," first-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams said after the match. "… I thought we just did a really good job of taking care of what we needed to and weathering the storm when we had to."
The Mustangs opened the dual by securing the pivotal doubles point for the 14th time this season. After falling at No. 3, Cal Poly needed to win at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the doubles point and both matches went to a decisive tiebreaker.
At No. 1, redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle and sophomore Peyton Dunkle captured a thrilling 7-6 (7-3) victory to secure their second straight win and improve to 13-7 on the season, tied for the ninth-most dual victories in a season by a doubles pairing in program history.
Graduate student Kim Bhunu and freshman Kennedy Buntrock finished off the dramatic doubles clash with the Matadors by grabbing a 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the second consecutive match. It was the sixth straight victory by the doubles pairing and the triumph allowed them to move to 12-5 on the season.
"The doubles was definitely a battle," Bhunu said after the dual. "Me and Kennedy just fed off each other and tried to stay calm even though it was a high-pressure situation."
Things remained tight in singles, but Delanie and Buntrock were able to earn victories in straight sets to give the Mustangs a commanding 3-0 lead. Delanie finished first, dismantling her opponent at No. 4 6-2, 6-3 to pick up her fourth straight win. Then Buntrock fended off CSUN's Angela Ho to snag a 6-2, 7-5 victory to improve to 8-3 at the No. 5 spot. It was also Buntrock's fourth consecutive victory.
The remaining four singles matches all went to a third set. After losing the first set in her match at No. 6, freshman Alexandra Ozerets rallied for a hard-fought 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win to clinch the dual victory for the Mustangs for the second straight match and punch their ticket to the championship match. With the win, Ozerets improved to 8-1 at the No. 6 spot and a team-best 15-4 overall this spring, tied for the ninth-most dual singles victories in a season in program history.
Bhunu (No. 1) and redshirt junior Melissa LaMette (No. 2) were leading their singles matches in the third set when the dual was clinched.
Friday's 4-0 victory was the Mustangs' second consecutive sweep in the Big West Championships. They dominated No. 7 seed UC Davis 4-0 in the quarterfinals Thursday.
"We've got some good momentum going into the finals tomorrow, so I think this match gives us a ton of confidence," Williams said.
Cal Poly will be seeking its second Big West Championship in program history when they take on top-seeded Hawai'i on Saturday. The Rainbow Wahine won the conference regular season title with an 8-1 record. Cal Poly fell at Hawai'i 5-2 during the regular season.
The Mustangs enter the championship on a four-match winning streak. Cal Poly has also emerged victorious in 13 of its last 16 matches.
