SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's tennis heads south on Highway 101 to take on rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday in its final regular season match.
The Mustangs and Gauchos have met in the last two Big West Championship matches and you can watch the action on all six courts Saturday starting at 11 a.m. here.
With a 5-3 record in Big West play, the Mustangs (11-8 overall) currently sit in fifth in the conference standings. Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton and CSUN all boast a 5-3 mark in Big West action this spring, but the Titans and the Matadors both own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mustangs after beating them earlier this season.
Depending upon what happens across the rest of the conference over the coming days, Cal Poly can finish as high as third and no lower than sixth in the final regular season standings.
The nine-team Big West Championships start Wednesday, April 26, at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego with the first round match between the No. 8 seed and No. 9 seed. The quarterfinals, which the Mustangs are locked into, are set for Thursday, April 27. If the season ended now, Cal Poly would face CSUN to open the Big West Championships. Earlier this season at the Mustang Tennis Complex, Cal Poly lost an epic back-and-forth battle with the Matadors 4-3.
The Mustangs are fresh off a dominant 6-1 Senior Day victory over UC Irvine that saw Kim Bhunu, Peyton Dunkle (pictured above), Delanie Dunkle, Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets all secure singles wins.
Peyton went undefeated in singles and doubles across both of Cal Poly's home duals this past week. She earned a pair of singles victories in straight sets to increase her match winning streak to four and improve to 9-6 on the season. In doubles, two wins at No. 1 allowed Peyton and her older sister, Delanie, to move to a team-best 11-6 on the season as a pairing.
Bhunu enters Cal Poly's final regular season dual with a 7-1 conference record in singles matches this season and a 10-7 mark at the No. 1 spot overall. In doubles, Bhunu and Buntrock own a 9-5 record at No. 2 and have won their last three matches that have been played out.
Ozerets, a freshman, is a team-best 12-4 in singles and with a victory Saturday against the Gauchos would match seven others for the 20th-most dual singles victories in a season in program history.
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS: The two-time defending Big West champions are led by sophomore Amelia Honer, who is the 60th-ranked singles player in the nation with a 13-1 record this spring. Honer won her record sixth Big West Player of the Week award of the season on Wednesday, and her and doubles partner Kira Reuter were ranked No. 12 in the latest ITA rankings with an 11-2 record. As a team, the Gauchos (6-12 overall) have won their last four duals and are currently second in the Big West standings with a 6-1 record. Cal Poly will be looking for revenge Saturday after losing to UC Santa Barbara in the last two Big West Championship matches. The Gauchos travel to CSUN at 1 p.m. Friday before hosting the Mustangs.
By the end of the weekend, Cal Poly will know who they will face in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships next Thursday.
