
Daniele, Nwagwu Impress on Final Day of Fresno State Invitational

CLOVIS, Calif. — Shelby Daniele and Melody Nwagwu (pictured above) both climbed the top marks list in their respective events and Quinton Alexander nearly entered the top 10 in the men's 800-meter to highlight performances for Cal Poly track and field at the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday.
A number of personal bests were recorded by Mustangs at the two-day meet, including a pair by Daniele. The 2019 Buchanan High grad impressed on her hometown track for the third time this season, dazzling friends and family at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
In the women's 100-meter dash, Daniele placed fourth with a lifetime best of 11.58 seconds, tied with Patrice Carpenter (1985) and teammate Jadyn Snaer for No. 2 on Cal Poly's all-time list. Then in the 200, she ran a personal best of 23.57 seconds to finish fourth and remain at No. 3 all-time, just .27 seconds off Carpenter's 1986 school record in the event. Daniele is currently tied for second in the Big West in both the 100 and 200.
A week ago at the Mustang Invitational, Nwagwu soared to a collegiate best in the women's triple jump to enter the top marks list in the event. On Saturday, she leaped to No. 7 all-time with a lifetime best of 40 feet, 9.5 inches to secure third.
Alexander shaved nearly a full second off his personal best in the 800, placing sixth with a time of 1:50.95, .25 seconds away from No. 10 on Cal Poly's all-time list.
Kevin Schmitt grabbed the lone individual victory for the Mustangs, taking first in the men's javelin (189-6). He also placed third in the high jump (6-8).
Freshman Tibyasa Matovu took home second in the long jump (23-11.5) with a leap that was 0.75 inches off his personal best, while Bailey Jones secured runner-up in the triple jump with a season best (47-7). Freshman Rory Devaney, the school record holder in the hammer throw and No. 5 all-time in the discus, grabbed second in the discus (169-4) at the Fresno State Invitational while Corban Payne earned second in the shot put (54-10.75).
Joey Souto posted a significant personal best of 52.990 seconds in the 400 hurdles to place fourth, while Zack Volpe brought home third in the pole vault (16-0.75). Chris Davis, Matovu, Souto and Chase Walter helped the men's 4x400 relay place third with an outdoor season best of 3:14.94.
On the women's side, Amaya Lopez-Fuller finished fifth in the discus with a mark of 167-1, just 7 inches off her lifetime best which is ranked No. 7 all-time. Lariel Henley was fifth in the high jump and freshman Riley Cash ran a personal best (4:33.12) in the 1,500 to place seventh.
Cal Poly opened the Fresno State Invitational on Friday, competing in the hammer throw at Warmerdam Field. On the men's side, Payne led the way capturing fourth with a personal best (193 feet, 5 inches) to remain at No. 5 in Cal Poly history in the event. Noah Bultman also tossed a personal best of 186 feet, 6 inches to move to No. 8 all-time.
The Mustangs now shift their focus to the Big West Championships hosted by Cal State Fullerton, which start May 5-6 with the multi-event portion of the meet. A handful of men's distance runners will also compete in the Oxy Invitational next Saturday, May 6, prior to the start of the full conference meet on May 12-13.
