SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sam Huard and Bo Kelly combined to complete 21 of 25 passes for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Cal Poly's 2023 Spring Game on Saturday on Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health French Hospital Medical Center.
Huard, the transfer from Washington, completed his first nine pass attempts and finished 11 of 12 for 145 yards and both scores -- 12 yards to Tyrece Fairly-Diyem and 33 yards to Logan Booher.
Kelly completed 10 of his 13 passes for 110 yards and also connected with DeMarcus Oandasan on a 41-yard touchdown strike during situational plays prior to the actual scrimmage.
Paul Holyfield Jr. leaps over defenders for extra yards in Spring Game.
"They did a nice job, they all came in and played well and I am real proud of their performances today," said first-year Mustang head coach Paul Wulff. "The progression of our players through these 15 practice sessions -- you obviously want to get better and they will -- they all did a nice job out there today."
Booher, Troy Fletcher and Alex Grywalski all caught three passes -- Booher for 62 yards, Fletcher for 32 yards and Grywalski 22 yards -- and 11 other Mustangs caught at least one pass in the 45-minute scrimmage.
"We have a lot of guys who can catch balls," said Wulff. "I thought we did a pretty good job catching the ball. Early on in camp, we saw a lot of dropped balls, but we've seen a lot of progression in each individual catching the ball, a vast improvement in spring camp."
With the second- and third-string offensive linemen in the game, Spencer Brasch was able to complete four of seven passes for 50 yards but was sacked four times. Bryce Weiner was two of four for 18 yards.
"Those guys are proven," Wulff said of his defensive line. "That whole defensive unit is growing. We knew a year ago these guys could hit and we saw some of that today. As these guys all get bigger and stronger and get healthy, we've got a chance to be darn good there."
The offense notched 15 first downs but, due to the four sacks and a bad snap from center, the Mustangs' running game finished in negative territory.
"We feel really good about what we did the last couple days of practice running the football," said Wulff. "Today was not a day in which we wanted to come out here and really kind of bang on each other on both sides of the ball. We wanted to make sure we weren't too physical. We just wanted to have a nice healthy experience today."
Saturday's Spring Game brought to an end the four-week Spring Camp encompassing 15 practice sessions. The players return to the practice field in late July for Fall Camp in preparation for the 2023 season opener Sept. 2 at home against the University of San Diego.
