Cal Poly Earns 19 Victories; Devaney, Nwagwu Post Top-10 Marks

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its third and final home meet of the season Friday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex, Cal Poly track and field captured 19 event victories in the Mustang Invitational and freshman Rory Devaney and sophomore Melody Nwagwu both recorded top-10 marks.
During the meet, the Mustangs recognized their 22 seniors — Belle Aduaka, Aimee Armstrong, Misty Diaz, Shimona Draper, Amaya Lopez-Fuller, Amanda Olla, Sydnie Rivas, Rachel Victor, Anthony Benitez, John Bennett, Mathis Bresko, Noah Bultman, Devon Cetti, Chris Davis, Tyler Esteves, Emmanuel Guzman, Bailey Jones, Lucas Lacambra, Hunter Matys, Wesley Salzman, Xian Shively and Christian Valles.
The seniors showed out in their final home meet as five secured event victories, led by Lopez-Fuller who took first in the women's discus (165 feet, 10 inches). Lopez-Fuller was less than 2 feet off her personal best (167-8, No. 7 in Cal Poly history) and owns the top mark in the Big West this season.
Esteves won the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.54 seconds, .05 seconds off his PR which is tied for No. 10 all-time at Cal Poly.
Jones (46-11.75, men's triple jump) and Valles (16-3.5, men's pole vault) both posted season bests to claim first in the respective events, while Matys won the men's long jump (22-11 wind-aided).
Devaney had yet another impressive day, earning two event victories. In the men's hammer throw, the 2022 San Luis Obispo High recorded a mark of 202 feet, 2 inches, just 2 inches off his school record (202-4) in the event. Then in the discus, Devaney tossed a personal best of 176-8 to move up to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list.
Nwagwu soared to a collegiate best to win the women's triple jump. Her mark of 40-6.5 was good for No. 8 on the Mustangs' all-time list. Nwagwu is also the school record holder in the women's indoor long jump.
Anisa Rind and Aspin Oliver nearly cracked the top-10 list in their respective events Friday. Rind ran a lifetime best of 24.27 seconds to win the women's 200-meter, .02 seconds away from No. 10 all-time in the event. Oliver was also .02 seconds away from No. 10 all-time in the women's 400 hurdles, running a personal best of 1:00.69 to finish second.
Sophomore Maya Holman secured first in the women's javelin with a personal best (139-10) and Natalie Rogers won the women's shot put (41-11.5). Rind, Shelby Daniele, Nwagwu and Jadyn Snaer guided Cal Poly to a first-place finish in the women's 4x100 and a season best of 45.40 seconds, 0.26 seconds off the 1982 school record. Snaer also crossed the finish line first in the women's 100-meter dash (11.83 seconds).
On the men's side, Kevin Schmitt grabbed a pair of victories in the high jump and javelin. Freshman MacGregor TeSelle won the 200 (22.01) and Rory Smail captured first in the 1,500 with a lifetime best (3:51.41). Quinton Alexander placed first in the 800 and freshman Oscar Gomez won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best (9:32.26) to round out the 12 event victories for the Cal Poly men.
Individually, Anna Grexton (women's hammer), Chase Kubinski (women's javelin), Isabella Rigby (women's discus), Lariel Henley (women's high jump), Cetti (men's discus), Nick Gammal (men's javelin), Noah Bustos (men's long jump), Logan Moon (men's 800), Lacambra (men's 1,500) and Euan Houston (men's 3,000 steeplechase) also earned runner-up finishes for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly heads to the Fresno State Invitational on April 28-29 for its final regular season meet.
