SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After reeling off three straight road victories, the Cal Poly women's tennis program is back home this weekend to begin a three-match homestand.
On Sunday, Cal Poly will host its first match at the Mustang Tennis Complex in three weeks when the team takes on Big West foe UC San Diego at noon. The match was originally scheduled for Friday, March 10, but moved to Sunday due to weather.
Cal Poly (4-5, 2-1 Big West) is rolling right now and fresh off a trip to Southern California where they picked up a pair of 6-1 victories over Big West foes UC Riverside and Long Beach State. Across those two contests, the Mustangs only dropped two doubles matches and one singles match.
Redshirt junior Melissa LaMette (pictured above) and freshman Alexandra Ozerets both went undefeated this past weekend as each grabbed two singles victories in straight sets. They also teamed up for a 6-3 doubles win at the No. 3 spot against LBSU, improving to 3-1 as a pairing and 2-0 in conference play.
Ozerets has shined this spring. She owns an impressive 7-1 record in singles, including a perfect 3-0 mark at the No. 6 spot and in Big West matches. Ozerets is currently on a four-match winning streak, as is redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle, who is 5-4 overall this spring and 2-1 in conference play.
Kim Bhunu is 3-0 in Big West singles play as well, reeling off three consecutive victories at the No. 1 spot for the Mustangs.
UC San Diego (6-7, 1-2 Big West) is in the midst of a busy week, playing four matches in six days. On Tuesday, the Tritons suffered a 4-0 home defeat to Ball State, but turned around the following day and picked up a 5-2 win over Utah State.
The Tritons head to UC Santa Barbara, the two-time defending Big West champions, at 11 a.m. Saturday before battling the Mustangs on Sunday. The Gauchos are 1-10 this season and 1-0 in conference play.
UC San Diego has lost three of its last four matches entering this weekend. The Tritons' lone Big West victory came against UC Davis on Feb. 18, where they earned a 5-2 win. They fell at home to Long Beach State 6-1 on Feb. 11 and at Cal State Fullerton 5-2 on Feb. 20.
The Mustangs are 3-1 all-time against the Tritons and have won the last three meetings. Cal Poly swept UC San Diego 7-0 on the road last season.
The Mustangs cap off their homestand against No. 67 Harvard on Thursday, March 16, and BYU on Saturday, March 18.
