SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's tennis secured its fourth straight victory Sunday, downing Big West foe UC San Diego 5-2 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Mustangs (5-5) are now 3-1 in conference play after earning wins over UC Riverside, Long Beach State and the Tritons over the last 10 days.
Sunday's match with UC San Diego was originally scheduled to be played at the Mustang Tennis Complex, but was moved to SLO Country Club due to wet court conditions.
The last-minute change in venue didn't affect the Mustangs one bit as Cal Poly was in control from the first serve against the Tritons.
For the first time this season, the Mustangs swept all three doubles matches. Melissa LaMette and Alexandra Ozerets finished first for Cal Poly at the No. 3 doubles spot, securing a 6-1 win to improve to 4-1 on the season as a pairing and a perfect 3-0 in Big West play.
Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle (pictured above) clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-3 triumph at the No. 1 spot. After falling behind 5-2, Kim Bhunu and Kennedy Buntrock rallied for a thrilling 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 2 to complete an undefeated day for Cal Poly in doubles. Bhunu and Buntrock are 4-2 as a tandem this spring.
Delanie Dunkle continued to tear it up in singles, upping her winning streak to five straight with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot. It was her second 6-0, 6-0 victory of the season.
Delanie's younger sister, Peyton Dunkle, gave Cal Poly a 3-0 advantage with a comfortable win at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-1.
Buntrock clinched the dual victory for the Mustangs with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the No. 6 spot. The freshman has now won three straight matches.
Bhunu earned the final singles victory of the day for Cal Poly, topping her opponent at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-4. The win allowed her to improve to a perfect 4-0 in conference play. It was also her fourth consecutive victory.
Cal Poly completes its three-match homestand with duals against No. 67 Harvard on Thursday, March 16, and BYU on Saturday, March 18, at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
