SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A dramatic singles victory by sophomore Peyton Dunkle powered Cal Poly women's tennis to a 4-3 victory over No. 65 Harvard on Thursday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
It was the Mustangs' (6-5) fifth straight win and their first over a nationally ranked team this season.
With the dual tied at 3-3, it all came down to the singles match on court No. 4 between Peyton Dunkle and Harvard's Angel You. Peyton pulled out an electrifying 7-6 (9-7) first-set victory, before falling just short in a tightly-contested second set, 7-6 (7-4).
In the decisive third set, Peyton rose to the occasion and delivered the Mustangs a victory, winning 6-3. The team stormed the court after Peyton charged the net to secure the match-winning point. The thrilling singles battle at No. 4 capped off an over four-hour dual between Cal Poly and the Crimson (7-7).
For the fourth time in their last five duals, the Mustangs opened the match by securing the doubles point over their opponent. Cal Poly lost at No. 3, but Peyton Dunkle and Delanie Dunkle, and Kim Bhunu (pictured above) and Kennedy Buntrock earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
With a 6-4 win, Bhunu and Buntrock improved to 5-2 on the season as a doubles pairing. The Dunkle sisters are now 6-4 overall.
In singles play, Bhunu stepped up at the No. 1 spot and secured a huge 6-4, 6-4 victory over Harvard's Charlotte Owensby, ranked No. 82 in the nation, to allow Cal Poly to take a 2-0 advantage. It was Bhunu's fifth consecutive singles victory and the first of her career over a ranked opponent.
The Crimson knotted the dual at 2-2 before freshman Alexandra Ozerets pushed the Mustangs back in front with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5. With the victory, Ozerets improved to 8-2 on the season.
After dropping the first set in her match at No. 2, Melissa LaMette rallied and earned a decisive 6-1 second-set victory. Unfortunately, LaMette was unable to complete the comeback as she dropped a hard-fought third set, 7-5.
Peyton's match winner at the No. 4 spot was her third straight singles victory.
This was the first meeting all-time between Cal Poly and Harvard.
The Mustangs will look to complete a perfect three-match homestand at 11 a.m. Saturday when they face No. 54 BYU at the Mustang Tennis Complex. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to honor Pam Boyden, the mother of former Mustang tennis player Susanne Boyden, who passed away in November after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
