SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Mustang women's tennis fell to No. 54 BYU 5-2 on Saturday at the Mustang Tennis Complex to wrap up a three-match homestand.
The defeat ended Cal Poly's five-match winning streak.
The Mustangs (6-6) came out and took it to the Cougars (8-5) early, securing the doubles point for the fifth time in their last six duals. Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle teamed up for a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot, improving to 7-4 on the season. Melissa LaMette and Alexandra Ozerets grabbed a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point for Cal Poly, moving to 5-2 as a pairing.
Sophomore Peyton Dunkle earned the only victory for the Mustangs in singles play, outlasting her opponent at the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. It was Dunkle's fourth straight singles win. The performance came just two days after Dunkle grabbed a dramatic singles win in a 4-3 dual victory over No. 65 Harvard. Dunkle's win against the Crimson on Thursday allowed Cal Poly to claim its first victory of the season over a nationally ranked team. The Mustangs honored those who have been affected
by cancer during Saturday's match.
Kim Bhunu (No. 1), Delanie Dunkle (No. 3), Ozerets (No. 5) and Kennedy Buntrock (No. 6) all won a set in their singles matches, but came up just short in the end. Five of the six singles matches against BYU went to three sets — the most for the Mustangs this season.
Cal Poly wore pink during Saturday's match to honor Pamela Boyden — the mother of former Mustang tennis player Susanne Boyden — who passed away in November after a battle with breast cancer. Fans were also able to write on sticky notes the names of loved ones who have been impacted by cancer and pin them to a board just outside the tennis courts. The board was covered with names of cancer survivors and those who have lost the courageous fight, including former Cal Poly Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mark Conover, who passed away last April.
After over a week-long break, the Mustangs return to action on Tuesday, March 28 for a match against Hawai'i Pacific in Honolulu.
