Mustangs Cap Conover Classic With Four Top-10 Marks
3/25/2023 9:00:00 PM | Track and Field
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly track and field capped off the inaugural Conover Classic on Saturday with eight more event victories and four top-10 marks.
The meet, formerly known as the Cal Poly Invitational, was renamed in honor of the late Mark Conover, who served as the Mustangs' Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for more than 13 years before passing away last April after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of skin cancer.
Kelly Conover, Mark's wife, spoke prior to the running events Saturday as Cal Poly alumni gathered to celebrate Mark's life and legacy.
"The [alumni] meet was always one of Mark's favorite meets because it brought together all of his passions," Kelly said while standing near the "MC" spray painted onto the infield at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex. "Our family is grateful for Cal Poly honoring Mark's legacy by naming this meet after him. It's a fitting tribute to a person that perfectly encompassed the Cal Poly motto of a Mustang is never conquered."
The Mustang sprint crew brought it on the final day of the meet as Jadyn Snaer, Shelby Daniele and Tyler Esteves all ran top-10 times in program history in the 100-meter dash.
Snaer and Daniele have been tearing up the school record books all season long — and Saturday was no different. Snaer posted a blistering time of 11.58 seconds to win the women's 100, moving into a tie with Patrice Carpenter (1985) for No. 2 on Cal Poly's all-time list. Daniele crossed the finish line at nearly the exact same time, registering an 11.61 to jump to No. 4 all-time. On the first day of the Conover Classic Friday, Daniele won the 200-meter with a lifetime best of 23.73 seconds, third-fastest in Mustang history.
Snaer and Daniele's times in the 100 Saturday bested the previous meet record of 11.66.
Esteves was in peak form in the men's 100, placing third with a time of 10.49, tied with Taylor Herrera (2010) for 10th-fastest in program history.
Lexi Evans continued her stellar freshman campaign in the women's pole vault, soaring to a collegiate best of 13 feet, 3.75 inches to secure second. The mark moved her to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list.
Cassidy Hubert helped the Mustang women capture two of their six victories on Saturday. Hubert won the 800-meter (2:13.44) and anchored Cal Poly's first-place 4x400 relay (3:53.36). Katelyn Carro, Anisa Rind and Aspin Oliver ran the other three legs on the relay. Rind also took second in the 400 (57.72).
Amaya Lopez-Fuller (159-7.75), Isabella Rigby (154-3.75) and Natalie Rogers finished first, second and third respectively in the women's discus. Rigby also tossed a personal best (43-3) in the shot put to secure second.
Melody Nwagwu won the women's triple jump (39-9), while Lariel Henley (5-4.75) and Chase Kubinski (5-2.75) captured first and second in the women's high jump, both recording PRs.
Devon Cetti (157-1) and Jason Reyes (154-11.25) placed first and second in the men's discus, while Christian Valles won the men's pole vault (15-6).
Wesley Salzman earned second in the men's 400 with a personal best of 48.92 seconds.
Overall, Cal Poly grabbed 17 event victories across the two-day Conover Classic and posted six top-10 marks.
The Mustangs will split the team between a trio of meets this coming week — the Mike Fanelli Track Classic (March 30-April 1), Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1) and West Coast Relays (March 31).
