5 Mustangs Record Top-10 Marks at West Coast Relays, Stanford Invitational
4/1/2023 1:30:00 AM | Track and Field
CLOVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly track and field saw five athletes post top-10 marks in program history across three separate meets Friday.
West Coast Relays
Rory Devaney and Amaya Lopez-Fuller recorded top marks in the discus and the Mustangs secured five event victories on the final day of the historic West Coast Relays hosted by Fresno State. The meet began Thursday with the men's and women's hammer throw and javelin at Warmerdam Field, and continued Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, where all the other events were held.
Devaney, a freshman who graduated from San Luis Obispo High in 2022, obliterated a 62-year-old school record in the men's hammer throw Thursday, and Friday he etched his name in the Cal Poly history books in another event. He won the men's discus with a mark of 172 feet, 6 inches, moving him into tenth on Cal Poly's all-time list.
Lopez-Fuller, who entered the top marks list in the women's discus earlier this season at the Cal Poly Open, finished second in the event at the West Coast Relays with a toss of 167 feet, 8 inches, jumping to No. 7 all-time.
In front of her hometown crowd, 2019 Buchanan High grad Shelby Daniele put on quite the performance. She won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.63 seconds and beat out CSUN's Arianna Alexander, the defending Big West champion in the event. She was just .02 seconds off her personal best (11.61), which is currently No. 4 in Mustang history.
Daniele also ran legs on Cal Poly's second-place 4x100 relay, which was just .02 seconds off their season best and .33 seconds away from the school record, and third-place 4x400 relay, which recorded a season best of 3:51.23.
Lariel Henley (pictured above) captured first in the women's high jump (5-3.75), while Annie Hatzenbeler took home second in the pole vault. Maya Holman recorded a lifetime best of 14.45 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to grab fourth, while Aspin Oliver earned fourth in the 400 hurdles with a PR (1:02.28).
Isabella Rigby (discus) and Lexi Evans (pole vault) also secured fourth-place finishes in their respective events.
On the men's side, Tibyasa Matovu, who was named Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week on March 28, had another standout performance, winning the long jump for the second consecutive meet with a leap of 23-11.5.
In the 800, Logan Moon (1:53.22) and Rory Smail (1:53.89) took home first and second respectively. In his first meet of the season, Kevin Schmitt cleared 6 feet, 7 inches in the high jump to place second.
Corban Payne took runner-up in the shot put and Bailey Jones matched his season best in the triple jump (46-4.25) to bring home fourth. The Mustangs earned third in the men's 4x100 and fourth in the 4x400.
Stanford Invitational Day 1
The Cal Poly distance crew shined on the first day of the prestigious Stanford Invitational, which brings together the top distance runners in the nation. Three Mustangs ran top-10 times — Aidan McCarthy, Rachel Victor and Carissa Buchholz.
In the men's 1,500, McCarthy shaved over two seconds off his personal best, running a time of 3:42.14 to move to No. 3 on Cal Poly's all-time list. McCarthy also owns the second-fastest 800 time in program history.
Victor, a grad transfer from Sacramento State, skyrocketed into third on the Mustangs' top marks list in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:27.70 — an over 40-second PR.
Buchholz battled through the grueling 10,000-meter Friday night under the lights at the Cobb Track & Angell Field and jumped to No. 7 all-time in the event with a time of 34:37.38, surpassing Sierra Brill (2021).
Nina St. John (3000 steeplechase) and Carson Smith (1,500) also recorded personal bests in their events Friday.
The Mustangs will wrap up competition at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday with the men's and women's 800-meter. The women's 800 begins at 2:14 p.m. Saturday with the men's to follow. You can follow the live results here.
