Mustangs Fall at Home Friday to Yale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly men's tennis, playing its first match in nearly two weeks, fell to visiting Yale 6-1 in its final match of a month-long homestand Friday at Mustang Tennis Complex.Joe Leather and sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate won their match 6-3, their third straight, to kick things off. The Bulldogs' (8-5) No. 2 tandem of Theo Dean and Aidan Reilly then won at the No. 2 spot 6-2 to leave it up to the No. 3 pairings to sort out.
At the No. 3 spot, it was as close as it could be as Cal Poly's Fernando Fonseca and Ben Keyser came back to tie it 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. However, it was Yale's Michael Sun and Eric Li winning the tiebreaker 7-2 to earn the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
Yale then had a strong showing in singles, winning in straight sets at the 1, 3 and 6 spots to officially clinch the match. For Cal Poly's Noah Berry, ranked No. 71 in the nation, it was his first loss of the season in singles.
Leather was able to win his match at the No. 2 spot in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to improve to 4-5 on the year.
Cal Poly will now embark on a five-match road trip, starting next weekend when they head to Houston to face Rice Friday, March 24 and William & Mary Saturday, March 25.
