Mustangs Set for Home Opener Friday Against San Francisco

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing its first four matches of the season on the road, Cal Poly men's tennis prepares to host its home opener this weekend as the University of San Francisco and Grand Canyon University come to town.Noah Berry, who has started out 2-0 in singles play at the No. 1 spot as well as winning two straight in doubles play alongside redshirt junior Colter Smith at the No. 2 spot.
USF (1-3) is following a week where they fell to UC Davis by a score of 4-1 which extended their losing streak to three matches. They are currently In the midst of a 14 match road stint to begin their season. The Dons and the Mustangs last met just a year ago during the Mustangs' season and home opener. In that match, Cal Poly came out on top by a score of 6-1. The Mustangs are 8-1 all-time against the Dons and have yet to lose a match at home in these matchups with a record of 6-0.
GCU is coming off a 4-0 victory over UC Riverside Wednesday morning and enters the weekend with a record of 2-5. The Lopes head to San Luis Obispo for the first of five consecutive matches on the road. The last time the two teams faced off in 2021, the Mustangs emerged victorious by a score of 7-0. Cal Poly is 5-0 all-time against GCU.
Following this weekend's matches, Cal Poly will host Boise State Sunday, February 19th at 11 a.m.
