Cal Poly Lets Several Three-Run Leads Slip Away in Loss to UConn
2/25/2023 12:15:00 AM | Baseball
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, who fell 2-1 to Cal earlier in the day, couldn't hang on as UConn collected 15 hits, including five home runs, to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Cal Poly (2-3), which hit three home runs, surrendered seven runs in the final three innings of regulation and UConn scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on a wild pitch.
Cal Poly scored at least once in six of the first nine innings, but was retired in order in the bottom of the 10th by Devin Kirby (1-0), the last of five Husky pitchers used in the game.
The loss was charged to Tanner Sagouspe, who pitched the final three innings for Cal Poly and allowed six runs and four hits with six strikeouts.
Mustang starter Travis Weston struck out seven over six innings, striking out the side in the first and fifth innings, but gave up three runs and seven hits with no walks.
Ryan Stafford hit a solo home run and Collin Villegas added a two-run shot in the fifth inning as Cal Poly snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs. Wyatt King homered with one out in the sixth for a 7-3 Mustang advantage.
Trevor Tishenkel, who played three seasons at Cal before transferring to Cal Poly this past offseason, doubled to drive in two in the eighth, giving the Mustangs a 10-7 lead.
UConn tallied three runs in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. T.C. Simmons homered leading off the frame. Luke Broadhurst, who homered twice earlier in the game, doubled to knock in the second run and a groundout tied the game at 10-10.
Cal Poly's 11 hits included two each by Stafford, Tate Shimao, Joe Yorke and Aaron Casillas. UConn finished with 15 hits, including three each by Broadhurst and Korey Morton.
Cal Poly will play Cal to wrap up its three-game slate in Berkeley on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. with junior right-hander Ryan Baum (1-0, 9.00 ERA) on the mound for the Mustangs. Cal's starter has not been announced.
