BERKELEY, Calif. -- Ryan Stafford and Collin Villegas belted home runs but Cal Poly dropped a 7-3 decision to Cal on Saturday, suffering its second loss to the Golden Bears this weekend on Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Stafford smashed a two-run shot in the eighth inning, his second of the season, and Villegas added a solo shot, his third of the year, in the ninth.
But Cal had already built a 7-0 lead and held on to earn its sixth victory in seven games. Cal Poly fell to 2-4.
Cal scored twice in the second inning on Jack Johnston's first home run of the year, three more in the fifth on Carson Crawford's blast, his second of the season -- Crawford also hit a grand slam at Stanford on Tuesday -- and two in the sixth on RBI doubles by Johnston and Dom Souto.
Tucker Bougie (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Cal, tossing seven scoreless innings with three hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Ryan Baum (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Cal Poly's six hits included a double and home run by Stafford and a single and home run by Villegas. Cal collected 10 hits, Johnston and Souto each with two.
The Mustangs were without the services of first baseman Joe Yorke and center fielder Jake Steels due to injuries.
Cal Poly will play its next 15 games inside Baggett Stadium, starting with a four-game series against Oregon State. The contests start Thursday and Friday night at 6, Saturday at 4 and Sunday at 10 a.m.
