Late Two-Run Double Lifts Nos. 18/19 Oregon State over Cal Poly, 5-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Travis Bazzana's two-run double in the eighth inning lifted No. 18/19 Oregon State to a 5-4 victory over Cal Poly in the opening game of a four-game non-conference baseball series Thursday night before 1,521 inside Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly had overcome an early 3-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth inning, but could not score the rest of the way against four Oregon State relief pitchers.
Playing its fourth one-run game in the last five times on the field, Cal Poly fell to 2-5. Oregon State (7-1) earned its seventh straight win following a season-opening loss to New Mexico.
The Beavers scored s run in the first inning on the first of three Cal Poly errors and added two more runs in the fourth on back-to-back one-out solo home runs by Brady Kasper and Mikey Kane. For both, it was their second home run of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, Evan Cloyd reached second base on a dropped fly ball in the Beaver outfield and eventually scored on an RBI single by Tanner Sagouspe. Ryan Stafford's 10-foot roller in front of the plate scored the second Mustang run, Aaron Casillas singled to drive in the third run and a sacrifice fly by Collin Villegas gave Cal Poly its 4-3 lead.
It stayed that way until the eighth when the first two Beaver batters reached base on a hit-by-pitch and a bunt single. Both came home two outs later on Bazzana's double to right-center field.Cal Poly had two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but failed to bring any of them home.
AJ Lattery (2-0), the fourth of six Oregon State pitchers used in the game, earned the victory with one scoreless inning. The loss was charged to Derek True (0-2) as he gave up the two eighth-inning runs.
Oregon State's 10 hits included two each by Bazzana and Gavin Turley. Stafford and Sagouspe each had two of Cal Poly's eight hits.
Second game of the series will be played Friday night at 6 with Mustang junior right-hander Bryce Warrecker (1-0, 1.64 ERA) to face Beaver senior right-hander Trent Sellers (1-1, 1.08 ERA).
Saturday's game starts at 4 p.m., with Sunday's series finale set for an 11 a.m. start.
