3 Mustangs Eye History in Boston

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Aidan McCarthy (pictured above), Spencer Pickren and Xian Shively will be looking to make history when they compete in the Boston University Last Chance Invite on Sunday to wrap up the indoor track and field season for Cal Poly.
McCarthy, Pickren and Shively are all entered in the men's mile at BU's famed Track & Tennis Center, which is known as one of the fastest indoor track facilities in the world. A number of world records have been set at the Terriers' facility, including the world record in the men's mile (3:47.01, 2019).
McCarthy, Pickren and Shively are all seeking a sub-four minute time in the mile, something no Mustang has ever accomplished. Two weeks ago during BU's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, 52 men broke four minutes in the mile doubling the previous single-meet record of 26.
The Cal Poly trio will take the track at 9:05 a.m. PST Sunday in heat four of the men's mile.
Nearly a month ago at the UW Invitational, McCarthy nearly broke four minutes in the mile, running a 4:00.16 — the fastest time indoors or outdoors in Cal Poly history. McCarthy, the defending Big West champion in the 800-meter, will be seeking redemption Sunday.
Last season, McCarthy was just 0.08 seconds away from earning a trip to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, running the second-fastest 800-meter time in school history (1:48.00) at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Shively and Pickren have also ran the mile already this indoor season, posting times of 4:02.73 and 4:03.37 respectively at the Husky Classic on Feb. 11. Last spring, Shively captured second in the 1,500-meter at the Big West Championships.
On Jan. 27 at the UW Invitational, men competed indoors for the Mustangs for the first time since Cal Poly fully transitioned to Division I during the 1994-95 school year. Men's indoor track and field is not an official NCAA sport at Cal Poly, however the Mustang men can participate in a few indoor meets without being eligible for any postseason competition.
Cal Poly is looking for a record-breaking end to the indoor season this Sunday in Boston.
The rest of the Mustang track and field team is gearing up for the start of the outdoor season, which begins next Friday, March 3 with the Cal Poly Open at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
