BOSTON, Mass. — History was made Sunday at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center as not one, but two Mustangs ran sub four-minute miles at BU's Last Chance Invite.
Aidan McCarthy (3:59.42) and Xian Shively (3:59.74) became the first two Mustangs in program history to record sub four-minute miles indoors or outdoors. They finished second and fourth in heat four of the men's mile at the Terriers' Last Chance Invite and 31st and 33rd overall in a loaded field of over 120 runners.
McCarthy and Shively both finished strong on the final lap to etch their names into the Cal Poly record books.
At the UW Invitational on Jan. 28, McCarthy nearly broke four minutes in the mile, running a 4:00.16. The 2022 Big West 800-meter champion got his redemption Sunday and now owns the fastest mile time in school history.
Shively dropped nearly three full seconds off his previous personal best in the indoor mile to reach a sub four-minute time.
Spencer Pickren (51st, 4:06.44) also competed in the mile and freshman Carson Smith helped set the pace for the Mustangs on Sunday.
BU's famed Track & Tennis Center is known as one of the fastest indoor track facilities in the world and McCarthy and Shively took full advantage of it. Overall, 34 men ran sub four-minute miles Sunday.
The Mustangs open the outdoor portion of their season Friday with the Cal Poly Open at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex. Admission is free.
