UPDATE 12:40 P.M. FRIDAY, FEB. 24: Sunday's match at Santa Clara has been rescheduled to Sunday, April 2, at 11 a.m. due to weather.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program will travel to the Bay Area for the first time this season to take on San Jose State and Santa Clara this weekend.
The Mustangs are looking to bounce back from a pair of hard-fought home defeats to CSUN and University of San Francisco this past weekend.
Cal Poly (1-5) faces San Jose State at noon Saturday at the Spartan Tennis Complex before rounding out the weekend in Santa Clara on Sunday with an 11 a.m. match at the Degheri Tennis Center.
Live scoring will be available for fans to follow online for both matches. Links to those can be found on the women's tennis schedule page. There is also a livestream available for Sunday's match at Santa Clara.
San Jose State is coming off a 4-3 loss to Grand Canyon at home on Feb. 17 and had a match with San Francisco on Friday postponed due to weather.
The Spartans (3-4) are led by juniors Jovana Babic and Irena Muradyan, who both enter this week on five-match win streaks in singles play and are both 5-1 on the season. In addition, Carolina Millian and Alba Pedrero Galindo — a pair of All-Mountain West singles honorees in 2022 — both hold records of 3-3 in singles play this season. Millian is a new addition to SJSU's squad, transferring from Utah State this fall.
Cal Poly snapped a seven-match losing streak to San Jose State the last time the two schools faced off at the Mustang Tennis Complex on Feb. 8, 2020, blanking the Spartans, who went 7-15 last season, 4-0.
Santa Clara is still looking for its first victory of the season. The Broncos (0-5) are currently in the midst of an eight-match homestand and just like San Jose are coming off a loss to Grand Canyon. Santa Clara compiled a record of 9-9 in 2022, splitting all of its matches at home and on the road evenly at 5-5 and 4-4 respectively. The Broncos are led this season by first-year head coach Clifton Awuy.
Cal Poly is looking to extend its winning streak against Santa Clara to four matches. The Mustangs last picked up a victory over the Broncos in March of last season at the Mustang Tennis Complex, shutting Santa Clara out 4-0.
For the Mustangs, freshman Alexandra Ozerets (pictured above) is looking to continue her strong play to begin the season. This past weekend, Ozerets went 2-1 overall in her matches. Ozerets picked up a singles victory against CSUN on Saturday to improve her record on the season to 4-1. Ozerets also teamed up with Melissa LaMette in doubles for the first time this season, picking up a victory against the Matadors at the No. 3 spot while falling to the Dons.
Following this weekend's matches, Cal Poly continues its four-match road stint when they head south to take on UC Riverside on Friday, March 3, and Long Beach State on March 4.
