Cal Poly Takes Down San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Kim Bhunu (pictured above) earned a comeback singles victory and freshman Alexandra Ozerets secured the clinching point for the Mustangs in a commanding 4-1 win at San Jose State on Saturday.
For the third time this season in dual play, Cal Poly (2-5) took the doubles point from its opponent. Bhunu and freshman Kennedy Buntrock rolled to a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot, while Ozerets and Melissa LaMette captured a nail-biting 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
With their victories Saturday, the pairings of Bhunu and Buntrock, and Ozerets and LaMette both improved to 2-1 on the season.
Bhunu kept the momentum going for the Mustangs with her play at the No. 1 singles spot. After dropping the first set, Bhunu rallied and won the second and third sets each by a score of 6-2 to allow Cal Poly to gain a 2-0 lead.
At the No. 4 spot, Delanie Dunkle earned her third singles victory of the season and second straight, downing San Jose State's Rozalina Youseva, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
The Spartans (3-5) won at the No. 6 spot to make it 3-1 in favor of the Mustangs, but Ozerets closed out the dual win for Cal Poly with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory at the No. 5 spot. Ozerets is now 5-1 in singles on the year.
LaMette (No. 2) and Peyton Dunkle (No. 3) both won the second set in their unfinished matches.
Cal Poly will remain on the road for a pair of Big West matches. The Mustangs travel to UC Riverside at 1:30 p.m. Friday before heading to Long Beach State next Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.
