Mustangs Battle, Fall Short to CSUN
2/18/2023 4:30:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's tennis fought until the very last point in a nearly four-hour match with CSUN on Saturday at the Mustang Tennis Complex but came up just short, falling 4-3 in the Big West opener for both teams.
For the second time this season, the Mustangs secured the doubles point with two new pairings. At the No. 2 spot, Kim Bhunu (pictured above) and Kennedy Buntrock teamed up to grab a 6-4 victory. At the No. 3 spot, Melissa LaMette and Sasha Ozerets battled to earn a 7-5 win and give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead over CSUN.
After dropping singles matches at the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 4 spots, Cal Poly rallied to even the dual at 3-3. Bhunu earned a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory at the No. 1 spot, and then freshman Alexandra Ozerets completed a comeback at the No. 5 spot, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Bhunu and Ozerets posted perfect records on the day.
With it all tied up, the match came down to the singles match at the No. 6 spot between freshman Kennedy Buntrock and CSUN's Emma Moratalla Sanz. Buntrock lost a first-set tiebreaker, but earned a hard-fought second-set tiebreaker win (8-6) to force a decisive third set. Unfortunately, the Matadors came out on top in the third to win the dual.
The Mustangs (1-4) remain at home to host a dual with University of San Francisco at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
