SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing its first four matches of the season on the road, Cal Poly women's tennis kicks off a three-match homestand this weekend with duals against CSUN and the University of San Francisco at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
It all starts at 11 a.m. Saturday when the Mustangs host the Matadors (3-1) to open Big West play. Cal Poly then takes on the Dons (2-3) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday to finish off the weekend.
Following Saturday's match, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Comerford Tennis Pavilion will be held. The brand new, donor-funded, state-of-the-art two-story tennis clubhouse adjacent to the Mustang Tennis Complex will feature locker rooms, coaches' offices, recruiting lounge, conference room and a viewing deck for supporters among a host of other amenities.
Cal Poly is coming off a two-match road trip in Fresno that saw them drop matches to Fresno State and Washington State. In Sunday's loss to the Bulldogs, Melissa LaMette (pictured above) and Peyton Dunkle both picked up their first singles victory and will look to build off that momentum this weekend.
Peyton Dunkle and Delanie Dunkle also went undefeated at the No. 1 doubles spot this past weekend to improve to 2-1 on the year. The sisters earned a 6-4 win against the Cougars and were leading 6-5 against the Bulldogs before Fresno State clinched the doubles point.
With a 3-1 mark, freshman Alexandra Ozerets owns the Mustangs' best singles record this season. She improved to 3-0 at the No. 6 spot with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 comeback victory against WSU, before moving up to the No. 5 spot in the dual with the Bulldogs and suffering her first defeat.
CSUN fell at USC, currently tied for No. 24 in the latest ITA rankings, 4-0 to open the dual season before reeling off wins over William Jessup, Westmont and Santa Clara. The Matadors saw their most recent match, a Feb. 5 battle at San Jose State, get canceled due to rain.
Prior to arriving in San Luis Obispo, CSUN heads to UCLA at 2 p.m. Thursday to begin a four-match road trip. Last season, the Matadors were the No. 6 seed in the Big West Tournament and fell to No. 3 Hawai'i 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
The Mustangs have won three straight matches against the Matadors and rolled to a 4-0 road victory last season.
San Francisco enters Sunday's dual fresh off a 6-1 win at Abilene Christian this past weekend. The victory ended a three-match losing streak for the Dons, who fell at Colorado, Colorado State and TCU.
The Mustangs fell at the Dons 4-2 in 2022, but in the last meeting at the Mustang Tennis Complex between the two teams on March 22, 2021, Cal Poly took down San Francisco 5-2.
Cal Poly caps off its homestand at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when they host Mississippi State.
