SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - After winning both of their first two home matches of the season last week, Cal Poly will look to keep its winning ways going when hosting Boise State this Sunday at the Mustang Tennis Complex. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
The Mustangs (3-3) picked up victories against the University of San Francisco and Grand Canyon University last week by scores of 6-1 and 7-0.
Boise State enters the weekend following a 6-1 win over Idaho, bringing their record to 3-1 on the season. This week kicks off a nine match road stint for the Broncos, who do not return home until mid-March. The Broncos compiled a record of 2-7 last season when playing on the road and have yet to claim their first road victory of this young season.
Coming off a season in which they put together a record of 13-11, Boise State entered the 2023 season under new instruction. Luke Shields, a former Bronco and three-time All American, is at the helm of the Boise State coaching staff for his first season. Before making his way back to Boise State, Shields previously served as the Head Coach at Fresno State in addition to completing coaching stints at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Washington, coaching both men's and women's tennis respectively.
The Mustangs last faced off against the Broncos in 2018, where they would come out victorious by a score of 4-0. Sunday's match will be the tenth between the Mustangs and the Broncos dating back to 1995, as the Broncos lead the all-time series at six wins to the Mustang's three. Cal Poly looks to extend its current win streak against Boise State to three matches.
After a weekend in which he went undefeated in both singles and doubles play, junior Noah Berry was named The Big West Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Playing from the No.1 spot, Berry collected four wins on the weekend, two of which coming alongside redshirt junior Colter Smith. These wins brought Berry's singles record to 4-0 on the season, and improved his and Smith's doubles record to 4-2. Berry and Smith have now won four straight matches as a team.
Following this weekend's match, Cal Poly is set to host Oregon Sunday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.
