Cal Poly Falls to Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. — Melissa LaMette (pictured above) and Peyton Dunkle picked up their first singles victories, but Cal Poly women's tennis fell to Fresno State 5-2 on Sunday.
The Mustangs led early in all three doubles matches, but dropped the doubles point after the Bulldogs earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle were winning their match at the No. 1 spot 6-5 before Fresno State (3-5) clinched the doubles point. The sister pairing is 2-1 on the season.
In singles, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 2-0 with a win at the No. 1 spot before LaMette got the Mustangs on the board. Playing at the No. 2 spot, LaMette picked up her first singles victory of the season, downing Fresno State's Maltilde Magrini 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to make it 2-1.
Kennedy Buntrock secured a 6-3 first set win at the No. 6 spot, before dropping the second and third sets to the Bulldogs' Carlotta Nonnis Marzano. Then Alexandra Ozerets suffered a 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) defeat at the No. 5 spot, allowing Fresno State to clinch the dual win. It was Ozerets' first loss this season.
At the No. 3 spot, Peyton Dunkle battled back after dropping the first set to capture a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory and her first singles win of the season.
Delanie Dunkle lost a hard-fought singles match at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.
Cal Poly (1-3) opens Big West play and a three-match homestand when they welcome CSUN to the Mustang Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m.
