Mustangs End Weekend With 7-0 Shutout of Grand Canyon

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team had an impressive showing to end the weekend, blanking visiting Grand Canyon University 7-0 Sunday at Mustang Tennis Complex.
Continuing their strong play in doubles, the Mustangs' (3-3) No. 1 duo of junior Noah Berry and redshirt junior Colter Smith got the match started with a 6-3 win over Jonathan Da Silva and David Wekesa. Berry and Smith have now won four straight matches and are 4-2 overall on the season so far.
The doubles point was clinched for the Mustangs after redshirt juniors Ben Keyser and Fernando Fonseca were victorious together at the No. 2 spot, 6-3.
In singles, Smith won his match first at the No. 3 spot over Wekesa in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Fonseca followed shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot over Adrien Coulome to notch his second straight victory.
The victory was clinched for Cal Poly by junior Carter Crookston after he pulled off a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot over Paolo Rosati to improve his record this year to 2-1.
Continuing to play the entire match out, Berry was able to keep his singles record perfect this year at 4-0 after defeating Da Silva at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 7-5.
Also collecting wins on the afternoon was redshirt junior Joe Leather at the No. 2 spot and freshman Aaron Eliscu at the No. 6 spot, both their second in a row, to complete the 7-0 shutout.
The Mustangs are now 18-2 in their last 20 home matches. They will have a chance to improve on that record when hosting Boise State Sunday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at Mustang Tennis Complex.
