2/11/2023 3:18:00 PM | Women's Tennis
FRESNO, Calif. — Freshman Alexandra Ozerets remained perfect in singles play, but Cal Poly women's tennis fell to Washington State 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in its first dual match in three weeks.
For the second straight match, the Mustangs dropped the doubles point, after the Cougars clinched it with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
Despite WSU already securing the doubles point, the two teams decided to play out the match at the No. 1 doubles spot and Cal Poly's Peyton Dunkle (pictured above) and Delanie Dunkle emerged victorious, 6-4. The win allowed the sisters to improve to 2-1 on the season.
In singles play, the Cougars clinched the dual victory with wins at the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots.
Ozerets got the Mustangs on the board in a hard-fought singles match at the No. 6 spot. After dropping the first set against WSU's Stefaniia Mikhailova, Ozerets battled back and only dropped one game over the second and third sets, winning 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. She improved to 3-0 on the year.
Delanie Dunkle nearly completed a comeback at the No. 4 spot, earning a 6-3 second-set victory before falling to the Cougars' Fifa Kumhom.
Cal Poly (1-2) will remain in Fresno to face the Bulldogs (2-5), who fell to WSU 5-2 on Friday. Sunday's match starts at 11:30 a.m.
