SEATTLE, Wash. — Misty Diaz entered the Cal Poly history books in the women's 800-meter and a handful of personal bests were recorded as the Mustang distance crew wrapped up competition at the Husky Classic on Saturday.
In her first career indoor meet, Diaz didn't disappoint running an 800 time of 2:09.31 to move to No. 4 all-time in school history and grab 21st overall.
A day after running the fifth-fastest indoor 3,000-meter time in school history, freshman Tatiana Cornejo hit the track in the women's mile and nearly recorded a PR, running a 4:49.98.
On the men's side, freshman Carson Smith (pictured above) sailed to an over two-second PR in the 800-meter, posting a 1:52.97 — breaking his own Division I indoor school record that he established at the UW Invitational two weeks ago. Smith won his heat in dramatic fashion and finished 20th overall.
All three Mustangs that competed in the men's mile recorded personal bests. Xian Shively led the way, placing 23rd with a 4:02.72. Spencer Pickren (4:03.37) and Rory Smail (4:08.82) also posted solid times.
Carissa Buchholz shattering the school record in the women's 5,000-meter (16:23.14) on Friday highlighted Cal Poly's trip to Dempsey Indoor.
Next up for the Mustangs is the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite on Feb. 24-25 in Seattle.
