SAN LUIS OBISPO – Solidifying future back lines and attack, the Cal Poly men's soccer program recently signed three youth standouts to National Letters of Intent.
Set to join the Mustangs ahead of the program's August 2024 training camp are right back and midfielder Cole Aman (Portland, Ore.), forward Colin Pearce (San Jose, Calif.) and left back Michael Vick (Kinvara, Ireland).
"The incoming guys share a desire to push this program forward, both on the field and in the classroom," said head coach Oige Kennedy, who completed his first year in 2023. "They have the right mindset, they're committed to be the best versions of themselves and are exactly the types of characters that we need in our program."
Cole Aman
A member of the Portland Timbers Academy since U15 level, Aman – splitting time at right wing and right back – has made two appearances for the club's MLS Next Pro side Portland Timbers2. A defensive midfielder for Ida B. Wells HS, Aman – who intends to major in biomedical engineering – was named 2023 Portland Interscholastic League Defensive Player of the Year and as a finalist for The Oregonian's High School Player of the Year honor.
"Cole is a player we've watched for a long time," Kennedy said. "He has a great engine and covers every blade of grass on the field. He'll add a top level of quality to our roster. He's already gotten time at the MLS Next Pro level, which is very rare, and he comes to us from an amazing environment at Portland Timbers. We're excited that he chose Cal Poly to continue his soccer and academic journey."
Colin Pearce
Part of De Anza Force SC's MLS Next program, Pearce becomes a second-generation Mustang following his father, Justin. Attending Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose, Calif.), the 6-1 Pearce intends to major in nutrition.
"From the moment we first got to see Colin play, it was clear that he has a maturity and a professionalism to how he approaches soccer," Kennedy said. "He loves the game and that passion is evident when he steps onto the field. He has great attacking instincts and we believe he can compete at a number of positions on our roster."
Michael Vick
As a left back for Los Gatos HS (Los Gatos, Calif.) this past fall, Vick helped the program to a 14-0-1 mark and a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League title. Vick intends to pursue studies in anthropology and geography.
"Mike is a quality soccer player who shows great composure on the ball," Kennedy said. "He's someone that we've watched a lot over the past year and we're excited he's joining us next fall. We can already tell the passion Mike has for Cal Poly."
