Schaefer Named Mechanics Bank Student-Athlete of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Enjoying his first career two-goal game during the Cal Poly men's soccer program's 3-1 home victory against UC San Diego (Oct. 8), sophomore forward Luke Schaefer was named Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Entering Sunday's match in the 27th minute, Schaefer needed just five minutes of action to hand Cal Poly a 1-0 lead after latching onto a misplayed ball by UC San Diego defender Evan Wellerstein 45 yards from goal. Dribbling on goal, Schaefer rounded Tritons goalkeeper Mitchell Wilson and scored near the right post.
Schaefer then broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock in the 60th minute with freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam sending a ball over the top of the UC San Diego defense for Schaefer, who poked the pass past Wilson.
With his brace, Schaefer now co-leads Cal Poly on four goals with junior forward Jackson Kestler, who scored in the 90th minute Sunday to cement the 3-1 victory. The pair also rank seventh among Big West goalscorers.
As a program, second place Cal Poly (4-5-2, 2-1-1) resumes action when visiting Sacramento State on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. before hosting rival UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m.
