CAL POLY INVITATIONAL FINAL SCORING: TEAM | INDIVIDUAL
CARMEL VALLEY – Graduate student Ben Quick (above) fired the second-lowest, single-round total in Cal Poly men's golf history Tuesday afternoon, closing the Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve with a seven-under 65 as the Mustangs completed the tournament with a 10th-place finish.
With a second successive frost delay prolonging Tuesday's start off the tee, players first had to complete the second round – originally scheduled as part of a 36-hole Monday schedule, but curtailed by the morning delay and darkness – before beginning the third at midday.
As a team, Cal Poly finished the final round with a seven-under 281, climbing three positions in the 15-program field. Cal Poly completed the three rounds at three-under, posting an 861 team total.
California captured the team championship with a collective 21-under 843 while Golden Bears junior Kuangyu Chen earned the individual title with a 10-under 206. Closing play with a final-round 65, Chen was the only player in the tournament to match Quick.
Quick began the Cal Poly Invitational with a 74 before finishing the second round with a one-under 71. His final round, however, comprised six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 13th hole. He climbed 30 positions in the final standings.
Quick's final round marked the seventh 65 in program history and the first since Justin De Los Santos hit the mark at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Feb. 25, 2017.
Cal Poly's leading scorer entering Tuesday's final round was junior Jackson Parrish, who opened with a 71 and 72 before carding a three-under 69 that included six birdies – four of which were scored on the final five holes. Parrish finished a four-under, climbing 14 spots to a 15th-place finish.
Senior Joey Zambri and junior Baron Szeto both finished with five-over 221s to share 53rd place on the leaderboard. Graduate student Austin Liu, meanwhile, carded an even-par 72 in the final round to climb up four positions.
Playing as independents, junior Parker Mapes closed with successive one-over 73s for 57th overall alongside freshman Louis Pilod, who posted a second round of four-under 68. Freshman Reese Sato finished the tournament with his best round of 76.
As a program, the Mustangs completed the fall portion of their schedule with the Cal Poly Invitational. Cal Poly resumes action at the Jan. 28-30 Sea Best Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville University at TPC Sawgrass (Dye Valley Course) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
