Torres Earns Big West Freshman of the Week Distinction

SAN LUIS OBISPO – After scoring his first collegiate goal – the 29th-minute equalizer during the Cal Poly men's soccer program's 1-1 draw at Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 28) that clinched a spot in the Big West Championship – defender Joaquin Torres was named Big West Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Trailing at Cal State Bakersfield following an eighth-minute opening goal from the Roadrunners, Cal Poly earned one of its nine corner kick opportunities 16 minutes from halftime. Freshman forward Diego Guerra's effort was played back toward goal before falling for fellow forward Jackson Kestler, who poked the ball toward Torres.
A starter in 13 of 16 matches, Torres became Cal Poly's 11th different goalscorer this season.
Needing just a draw to clinch its first postseason berth in two years, Cal Poly made the scoreline stand for an hour to finish in a tie for fifth place in the final Big West standings on 12 points alongside UC Riverside.
The Mustangs open the Big West Championship at fourth-seeded UC Davis on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals to visit regular season champion Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Nov. 4.
