Big West-Leading Mustangs Complete Thrilling Comeback at Hawai'i
10/22/2023 10:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
WAIPAHU, O'ahu — Seniors Olivia Ortiz and Kate Reedy scored goals 32 seconds apart in the 85th minute to propel Cal Poly women's soccer to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory at Hawai'i on Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.
With their incredible win, the Mustangs (8-6-3, 6-2-1 Big West) held on to the top spot in the conference standings with one match remaining. Cal Poly (19 points) sits 1 point in front of second-place Cal State Fullerton and 2 points ahead of third-place UC Davis. With a victory in their regular season finale Thursday at home against UC San Diego, Cal Poly — who has already clinched a postseason berth — would secure its third straight Big West title, the No. 1 seed in the Big West Championships and the right to host the semifinals and championship match in the conference tournament.
"I'm still recovering," head coach Alex Crozier joked after the Mustangs' dramatic victory. "… It was fantastic because this is a hard place to play. Playing at Hawai'i is probably one of the most difficult games we have, so it was a great win."
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Rainbow Wahine (5-6-3, 4-4-1 BW) scored 1:28 into the second half to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Mustangs continued to press forward and eventually switched to a 4-2-4 formation to generate more chances offensively. Following a corner kick in the 84th minute, Cal Poly finally broke through as Ortiz blasted a ball from distance over the Hawai'i goalkeeper and into the back of the net at 84:20 to level the match at 1-1. It was Ortiz's second goal of the season and the 12th of her career. It was also the ninth latest equalizing goal in program history.
Then just 32 seconds later, the Mustangs struck again as Reedy received the ball near midfield, powered through the Hawai'i backline and rocketed a shot to the top corner to give a Cal Poly 2-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the match.
The Mustangs staved off the Rainbow Wahine down the stretch to capture their sixth conference victory. For Reedy, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the year and the game-winner was her third this season, the most among Big West players.
The time interval (32 seconds) between the Mustangs' equalizer and their go-ahead goal was the second quickest in program history.
Trailing 1-0 with less than six minutes, Cal Poly was in desperate need of a hero, and they received two in the form of Ortiz and Reedy.
"The team kept fighting and we were gritty," Crozier said, "but this game was going to take some individual brilliance, and it was Liv first and then Kate second."
Fourteen different players have scored for the Mustangs this season — tied for the second most in program history — and the team's depth and experience shined through once again on Sunday.
"All year it's been by committee," Crozier said. "Someone steps up one game, someone steps up the next, and it happened to be those two tonight."
Freshman Annika Smith had a team-high three shots in the match, and junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made four saves.
Cal Poly hosts UC San Diego at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital to wrap up regular season play. Regardless of Thursday's result, the Mustangs can finish no lower than third in the conference regular season standings.
