SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its regular season finale, Cal Poly women's soccer fell to UC San Diego 1-0 on Thursday at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
With the defeat, the Mustangs (8-7-3, 6-3-1 Big West) dropped to third in the final Big West regular season standings and will host No. 6 seed Hawai'i (5-7-3, 4-5-1 BW) in the first round of the Big West Championships at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field. The winner will advance to face No. 2 seed UC Davis in the semifinals of the Big West Championships at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium. The Titans (21 points), who claimed the Big West regular season title, and Aggies (20 points) both won Thursday to move ahead of Cal Poly (19 points) in the final conference table.
The Mustangs out-chanced, outshot and out-possessed the Tritons (5-8-5, 4-3-3 Big West), but just couldn't find the back of the net. Cal Poly was seeking its third straight Big West regular season title.
UC San Diego's Alexis Nguyen scored the match's lone goal in the 89th minute.
Cal Poly was the aggressor early in Thursday's matchup as senior Olivia Ortiz, and sophomores Jessie Halladay, Emily Lieber and Camryn Penn all registered shots on goal in the opening half. Lieber earned the best scoring opportunity in the first 45 minutes, sending a beautiful shot in the 43rd minute from just outside the box toward the right corner of the net that the UC San Diego keeper just got a hand on.
The Mustangs outshot the Tritons 8-2 in the first half.
Cal Poly continued its stranglehold on possession in the second half as they looked to break down the UC San Diego defense. Redshirt freshman Sophia Minnite sent a dangerous shot with her left foot on net in the 61st minute that the Triton goalkeeper was able to handle.
In the 84th minute, senior Kate Reedy, Cal Poly's leading goal scorer, sent a shot just wide of the left post.
Moments before the Tritons' game-winning goal, freshman Sophia Moness nearly found the back of the net on a great opportunity. In the 87th minute, freshman Siena Urzua sent a pass to Minnite in the box, who chipped the ball to an open Moness. She sent a blast just over the top of the crossbar.
Cal Poly finished with 17 shots to the Tritons' eight, firing 10 of them on frame.
Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made her 27th consecutive start in net, recording five saves.
The Mustangs now shift their attention to making a run in the Big West Championships. Sunday's first round matchup will be a rematch of a thriller between Cal Poly and Hawai'i this past Sunday. The Mustangs scored two goals 32 seconds apart in the 85th minute to secure a 2-1 come from behind win over the Rainbow Wahine in Hawai'i.
