Mustangs on Downside of Thursday Decision to Long Beach State

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior forward Brantly Stevenson finished with a team leading 13 points and senior guard Trevon Taylor grabbed a career best 11 rebounds, but Long Beach State led Thursday's matchup inside Mott Athletics Center wire-to-wire as the Mustangs fell, 70-52.
Junior guard Kobe Sanders added nine points for Cal Poly (7-14, 1-8), which was held to a 35.9 (22-for-62) percent field goal mark and, after trailing Long Beach State (11-10, 5-4) by 10 at halftime, cut its second-half deficit to single digits just once.
In the first meeting between the two programs inside Mott Athletics Center since Feb. 5, 2020, Cal Poly also received eight points apiece from Taylor and graduate guard Chance Hunter.
Playing two of its next three games at home, Cal Poly resumes action on Saturday, Jan. 28, hosting Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
During Thursday's matchup, Cal Poly erased an early 6-0 deficit with successive Sanders three-pointers. Leading Cal Poly 15-14 midway through the half, however, Long Beach State produced a 10-2 run. The Beach, which kept Cal Poly to a 38.2 (13-for-34) percent field goal mark in the first half, led by as much as 12 multiple times to before taking a 39-29 lead into the break.
Long Beach State then limited Cal Poly to just three field goals during the opening seven minutes of the second half to extend its lead to 51-35.
Cal Poly though responded with a 9-2 run that included two dunks from junior forward Bryan Penn-Johnson to cut the deficit to 53-44 with nine minutes to play.
Long Beach State, however, knocked down its next four free throw attempts to recover and closed the matchup by holding Cal Poly to just three field goals in the final nine minutes.
