TUCSON, Ariz. – Cal Poly women's tennis wrapped up its season-opening weekend in Tucson on Sunday with a 6-1 defeat to Arizona at the Robson Tennis Center.
The Wildcats secured the doubles point winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, but not without a fight from the Mustangs. Sophomore Eliza Bates and freshman Kennedy Buntrock, Cal Poly's No. 3 doubles pair, grabbed a 6-3 victory for the second straight match.
In singles, Arizona earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots to take a 3-0 advantage.
Freshman Alexandra Ozerets got the Mustangs on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 spot to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Arizona clinched the match at the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-0 win, but Kim Bhunu (pictured above) and Buntrock continued to battle in their singles matches.
Bhunu fell behind in her match at the No. 1 spot, but rallied for a 7-6 (7-4) first set triumph. Unfortunately, she dropped the second set and lost a third set tiebreaker 10-7.
After dropping the first set in her match at No. 5, Buntrock captured a commanding 6-1 second-set victory. She wasn't able to complete the comeback, falling 6-2 in the third.
The Mustangs finished their trip to Tucson with a 1-1 record.
Cal Poly returns to action on Feb. 11-12 for matches against Washington State and Fresno State in Fresno.
