Mustangs Fall Late in Second Half at UC Davis, 65-63
1/21/2023 5:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAVIS – Forwards Alimamy Koroma and Brantly Stevenson (above) co-led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 14 points apiece Saturday, but the Mustangs – ahead of UC Davis by 13 points with five minutes to play – were held scoreless the remainder of the afternoon and fell to the Aggies inside the University Credit Union Center, 65-63.
Graduate guard Chance Hunter added 10 points for Cal Poly (7-13, 1-7), which led UC Davis (12-8, 5-3) by four points before scoring on four successive possessions to extend the advantage to 63-50 with five minutes remaining.
Aided by five Mustang turnovers in the next three minutes, however, UC Davis tied the matchup at 63-63.
A traveling violation from UC Davis guard Ty Johnson with 67 seconds left handed Cal Poly the opportunity to surge ahead, but the Mustangs committed a shot clock violation on the other end. Johnson, who finished with a game high 21 points, then secured the eventual victory for the Aggies with a layup with eight seconds to play.
Cal Poly, which shot 52.4 (11-for-21) percent during the second half, attempted just three shots during the final five minutes and the final chance from junior guard Kobe Sanders was blocked by Aggies forward Christian Anigwe with four seconds to play.
The Mustangs trailed UC Davis just twice Saturday, never by more than two points and for only 45 total seconds.
Cal Poly plays three of its next four games at home inside Mott Athletics Center, beginning on Thursday, Jan. 26 against Long Beach State at 7 p.m.
During Saturday's matchup, Koroma notched the afternoon's first basket after three minutes and Cal Poly trailed just once in the first half, erasing an early 7-5 deficit with a 14-0 run.
In keeping UC Davis without a field goal for seven-and-a-half minutes, Cal Poly led by as much as 24-11 during the first half. After limiting UC Davis to a 25.9 (7-for-27) percent field goal mark in the first half, Cal Poly took a 29-20 lead into the break.
Cal Poly received back-to-back Koroma jumpers to open the second half and stretch the lead to 13 points before UC Davis produced a 17-4 run in just five minutes to tie the matchup at 37-37.
The Mustangs, however, regained control of the lead with another Koroma layup and two Sanders free throws.
