SEATTLE, Wash. — Redshirt sophomore Carissa Buchholz and sophomore Maya Holman both posted top five marks in program history and the seven other Mustangs that competed recorded personal bests as Cal Poly track and field opened its indoor season Saturday at the UW Indoor Preview.
In the first event of the 2023 season for the Mustangs, Holman wasted no time putting her name in the school record books, running the fifth-fastest time (8.91 seconds) in Cal Poly history in the prelims of the women's 60-meter hurdles. The mark was also the fourth fastest in prelims.
Holman went on to place sixth in the finals of the 60 hurdles (8.98). The Vacaville, Calif. native also had a stellar showing in the long jump, placing fourth with a personal best of 18 feet, 5.75 inches. She improved upon her previous personal best by over 5 inches.
Buchholz ran a blistering time of 9:34.11 in the women's 3,000-meter to place 19th, a mark good for fourth best in program history. Buchholz set the tone on an impressive day for the women's distance team, dropping over 30 seconds from previous PR in the event.
Five other Mustangs raced in the 3,000, including redshirt junior Amanda Olla who took 29th with a time of 9:45.35, sixth best all-time in school history. Even more impressive, it was the first track meet of Olla's career at Cal Poly.
Sydnie Rivas brought home 33rd with a time of 9:48.22, seventh-best in Mustang history. Rachel Victor, a grad transfer from Sacramento State, captured 37th (9:56.76). In their first indoor track meet, sophomores Nina St. John and Ellie Baxter grabbed 46th and 55th respectively. All six Mustangs that ran in the 3,000 posted PRs.
The two other Mustangs that made the trip to Seattle — freshmen Tatiana Cornejo and Riley Cash — established personal records in the women's mile as Cornejo secured 21st (4:56.34) and Cash 22nd (4:57.99). The pair finished second and third respectively in the third heat.
