SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The 2023 indoor season will officially get underway for the Cal Poly track & field program when they send a handful of athletes to Seattle on Saturday for the UW Indoor Preview.
Competition starts at 8:20 a.m. and live results are available here.
Eight women's distance runners along with multi-event standout Maya Holman will compete for the Mustangs at Dempsey Indoor.
Riley Cash and Tatiana Cornejo will race in the women's mile, while Ellie Baxter, Carissa Buchholz, Amanda Olla, Sydnie Rivas, Nina St. John and Rachel Victor are set to take the stage in the 3,000-meter.
Cornejo is fresh off a cross country season where she placed 14th at the conference championships to secure Big West Women's Freshman of the Year honors. She was the first Mustang since 2017 to receive the award and the 10th in program history.
Last year as a true freshman, St. John placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at The Big West Track & Field Championships to score team points for the Mustangs.
Victor is a grad transfer from Sacramento State who etched her name in the Hornet history books during her time there running the fifth-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time, sixth-fastest 6K time and 10th-fastest 3,000-meter time.
In Seattle, Holman has three events on her schedule — the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and high jump. Holman is looking to build off an impressive freshman campaign that saw her place sixth in the heptathlon at The Big West Multi-Event Championships by posting personal bests in points and five events.
After the UW Indoor Preview, Cal Poly travels to Colorado on Jan. 19-21 for the Air Force Lindeman Invitational inside the Cadet Field House. The Mustangs are scheduled to return to Seattle three more times during the indoor season to take part in the UW Invitational on Jan. 27-28, the Husky Classic on Feb. 10-11 and the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite on Feb. 24-25.
