CLOVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field team won seven events and saw four athletes record top-10 marks in program history during the West Coast Relays hosted by Fresno State on Saturday at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.
A total of 40 Mustangs competed in the meet, marking the fifth straight year Cal Poly took part in the West Coast Relays.
The meet was highlighted by some strong performances in the men’s and women’s 800-meter. On the men’s side, three-time First Team All-American Aidan McCarthy made his outdoor season debut and cruised across the finish line in a time of 1:47.51 to take the event victory, the fastest time ran in the West Region this season and currently No. 4 in the nation. The indoor and outdoor 800 school record holder and three-time Big West 800 champion was about 2 seconds off his outdoor personal best of 1:45.53. It was McCarthy’s first time running an open 800 since finishing fifth at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships last June.
Teammate Carson Smith was right on McCarthy’s heels, crossing the line in second in a time of 1:47.65 — moving him up to No. 3 in school history in the event. His time currently ranks No. 3 in the West Region this season and No. 6 in the country. Jeffrey Overgaard finished third in a time of 1:50.41 and Taj Clark placed fourth with a personal best of 1:50.67.
On the women’s side, Jordan Jackson and Ella Echsner pushed each other to some incredible times in the 800. After a fantastic pacing job by Elianah DeMange through 600 meters, Jackson and Echsner had a photo finish at the line with Jackson taking the victory by just .08 seconds at 2:08.52. The time is the 11th fastest ran in school history and it was Jackson’s first time running the event, as she is the current indoor 400 and 600 school record holder and ranks No. 4 all-time outdoors in the 400.
Echsner’s time of 2:08.60 was nearly a 4.5-second lifetime best and is the 13th fastest in school history. Jackson and Echsner currently rank No. 22 and No. 23 in the West Region in the event.
Ava Simos and Madison Easter both posted top-10 times in school history. In the women’s 200-meter, Simos ran a significant lifetime best of 23.89 seconds to place second, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Easter captured third in the women’s 100 with a lifetime best of 11.70 seconds, moving her up to No. 6 in school history in the event.
Camrenne Genilla, a transfer from San Francisco State, entered the top marks list for the first time, recording the 10th-best mark in school history to win the women’s javelin (152 feet, 2 inches; 46.39 meters). The mark currently ranks No. 38 in the West Region.
Three other Mustangs won events on the women’s side at the meet. Taylor Hofland secured first in the shot put (47-10.5; 14.59m), Isabella Rigby took the top spot in the discus (158-9; 48.39m) and Astrid Teran captured first in the pole vault (13-2.25; 4.02m).
Melanie Castelli and Grace Proudfoot tied for second in the women’s high jump (5-5.75; 1.67m), Desie Armstrong placed third in the women’s long jump (19-4.75; 5.91m), and Avery Adelman (1:01.87) and Kaira Burrage (1:02.09) both ran PRs in the women’s 400 hurdles.
Vincent Atilano captured first in the men’s 400 hurdles with a time of 51.53 seconds, just .19 seconds off his fourth fastest time in school history. Alexander Franco took second in the men’s 400 with a time of 47.53 seconds.
In the 4x400 relays, the Mustangs mixed things up on both the men’s and women’s sides. In the women’s 4x400, Cal Poly’s A relay made up of Avery Adelman, Ella Echsner, Tayhlore Hoagland and Kalia Estes posted a time 3:46.89 to place second. Cal Poly’s A relay for the men recorded a time of 3:17.73 to finish third as Vincent Atilano, Taj Clark, Wil Brennan, Lewis Westwood all ran legs on the relay. McCarthy and Smith also ran legs on Cal Poly’s B relay which finished fifth with a time of 3:18.70.
