Cal Poly Drops Thursday Game at Long Beach State; Hunter Hits 1,000
1/12/2023 9:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LONG BEACH – Graduate guard Chance Hunter (above) surpassed 1,000 career points Thursday evening for the Cal Poly men's basketball program, but the Mustangs trailed Long Beach State wire-to-wire Thursday evening in dropping a 77-58 decision inside Walter Pyramid.
Senior guard Trevon Taylor finished with a team leading 13 points and six rebounds for Cal Poly (7-10, 1-4), which was forced in 19 turnovers and a 34.5 (19-for-55) percent field goal mark in trailing Long Beach State (8-9, 2-3) wire-to-wire.
Entering play Thursday on 999 career points, Hunter reached his milestone six minutes into action after converting Cal Poly's first free throw attempt of the evening. Prior to Cal Poly, Hunter recorded 854 combined points between time with California Baptist (2021-22) and Long Beach State (2019-21).
Cal Poly concludes a two-game road trip on Monday, Jan. 16 at UC Riverside. Tip time is 5 p.m. with action broadcast on ESPN+.
The Mustangs were held to a 1-for-11 shooting start Thursday and fell behind 13-3 after seven minutes following a jumper from Long Beach State center Chayce Polynice.
Buckets from Hunter, sophomore guard Aidan Prukop and senior forward Alimamy Koroma during three of Cal Poly's next four possessions cut the deficit to 16-9 midway through the half. The Beach, however, extended the lead with buckets from forwards Lassina Traore and Amari Stroud and maintained a double-digit advantage the remainder of the half.
In keeping Cal Poly to a 27.6 (8-for-29) percent first-half field goal mark, Long Beach State took a 36-21 lead into the break.
Long Beach State produced the opening field goal of the second half for its largest lead to date before Cal Poly – behind two free throws and a three-pointer from junior guard Kobe Sanders – cut the deficit to 42-31 with 16-and-a-half minutes remaining.
The 11-point gap, however, was as near as Cal Poly closed the remainder of the evening.
