Cal Poly Falls to No. 12 Stanford
9/4/2022 9:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
STANFORD, Calif. — Senior forward Madison Demijohn netted her first career goal as Cal Poly women's soccer fell to No. 12 Stanford 4-1 Sunday at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
Trailing 4-0, Demijohn was able to slide a shot past the Cardinal goalkeeper in the 87th minute to get the Mustangs on the board and earn the team's first and only shot on goal. Sophomore McKenna Carbon, who made her first start of the season Sunday, was credited with the assist.
It was Demijohn's first goal in her 21st appearance for the Mustangs.
The deep and talented Cardinal (5-0) entered Sunday's match fresh off a 2-0 victory over No. 8 Penn State on Thursday and were tough to slow down.
"Obviously, playing teams like this makes you better, but we were on our heels from the start," Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said. "We never got into an attacking rhythm … We have areas now we need to work on, and we still have two very difficult games on the road. We're still on the right track and the team is very good, but we just never got into our rhythm today and we were punished for it."
Despite the loss, sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel had a stellar day for the Mustangs in net grabbing 13 saves, tied for the third most in a match in program history.
"She kept it close for a while, she made some great saves," Crozier said about Samuel. "She's done a good job of saving the ones she should, and she saved a bunch she probably shouldn't have today, so she did a great job. She was just under attack the whole time."
Stanford came out aggressive early and applied the pressure to the Cal Poly backline, but Samuel was sharp between the pipes. In the opening minute, she made a diving stop on a shot heading toward the right post. She also turned away a header by the Cardinal and made a strong kick save before Stanford finally broke through in the 12th minute on a goal from forward Abby Greubel.
After the score, Samuel continued to stand tall in net, steering clear one Stanford shot after another to keep the Mustangs in the match.
The Cardinal attack doubled its lead in the 41st minute on a goal from Elise Evans. Samuel secured two more amazing saves on Stanford headers before the end of the half.
The Mustangs generated several dangerous chances in the opening 45 minutes, including one from senior midfielder Camille Lafaix, but were unable to register a shot.
A shot by attempt by senior forward Olivia Ortiz in 60th minute was blocked by a Stanford defender, and a minute later midfielder Maya Doms buried a penalty kick goal for the Cardinal to make it 3-0.
Samuel kept up her excellent performance in net for the Mustangs, but Stanford earned its fourth and final tally of the match in the 70th minute on a goal by Catherine Paulson.
"I told the team we won the last 10 minutes, we just need to do that nine more times," Crozier said.
Stanford outshot the Mustangs 38-2.
Cal Poly (2-3) heads to Gonzaga on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match, before wrapping up a five-game road trip next Sunday, Sept. 11, at Washington State.
