SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Coming off a second straight Big West regular season championship last season, the Cal Poly men's tennis team will begin the fall portion of its 2022-23 season Saturday, Oct. 1 when junior Noah Berry travels to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the ITA All-American Championships.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the event, with other notable teams including the University of Southern California, the University of Virginia and Ohio State University participating, all of which boast top seeds in the Men's Singles division, with the University of Southern California also holding a top seed in the Men's Doubles division.
In singles competition, nineteen of the top twenty-ranked players in the ITA Collegiate Tennis National Preseason Rankings are entered into the Men's All-American Singles Championship. Berry will be the lone player representing Cal Poly.
Coming off a year where the Mustangs won the Big West regular season championship, head coach Nick Carless enters his 12th season with the program looking to build off last year's success. Alongside Carless, Jurgen De Jager returns to the coaching staff for his third season as he was recently promoted to serve as the assistant coach of the program after spending his last two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach. Last season, the Mustangs compiled an overall record of 15-6 while going 5-1 in conference play.
The Mustangs return seven members of their 2021-2022 roster, five of which earned All-Conference honors. They include junior Noah Berry (First Team Singles, Honorable Mention Doubles), redshirt juniors Fernando Fonseca (Honorable Mention Doubles), Joe Leather (First Team Doubles, Second Team Singles) and Colter Smith (Second Team Doubles, Honorable Mention Singles), and sophomore Bastian Weststrate (Second Team Doubles.) In addition to the seven returners, the Mustangs have welcomed two incoming freshmen in Aaron Eliscu and Zachary Pellouchoud, both of which were top-100 high school recruits.
Following the ITA All-American Championships, the Mustangs will travel to Santa Barbara from Oct. 7-9 as they participate in the UCSB Classic.
