MORAGA, Calif. — Cal Poly women's soccer opened its 2022 campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Saint Mary's on Thursday.
This was the Mustangs second straight loss to the Gaels, who finished 10-4-4 in 2021 and received votes in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll for the first time in 17 years. Cal Poly fell to Saint Mary's 2-1 last year at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Senior midfielder Camille Lafaix, who became the first player in program history to be named to the preseason MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list Thursday morning, scored Cal Poly's lone goal, chipping a shot over the Saint Mary's goalkeeper into the back of the net in the 83rd minute on an assist from freshman forward Emily Lieber.
The Gaels scored all three of their goals in the opening half, including two four minutes apart, to separate themselves from the Mustangs. The first tally came in the 30th minute when a shot by Saint Mary's Tessa Salverstrin went off the top right corner of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Saint Mary's struck again in the 34th minute and just over a minute before halftime, Priscilla Ward scored for the Gaels. All three of Saint Mary's goals were scored by freshmen.
"We came out a little stagnant," Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said after the game. "We haven't found our rhythm on attack yet and that came back to bite us."
In the 59th minute, freshman midfielder Brennan Cole blasted a free kick from 30 yards out off the crossbar.
Lafaix nearly scored again in the closing moments of the match, but Saint Mary's goalkeeper Taylor Poland got just enough of Lafaix's shot to keep the ball from rolling across the goal line.
"It got better in the second half," Crozier said about his team's play. "There were good pieces … and there was a lot of good individual effort, but collectively it wasn't there."
Lieber earned her first career start and point during Thursday's match. Four other true freshmen saw action for the Mustangs — Cole, Annie Larson, Camryn Penn and Caylie Button.
Lafaix's tally Thursday was the 13th goal of her career. She led the team with two shots on goal, while sophomore defender Emma Brown, senior midfielder Monserrat Hernandez Marquez and senior defender Kylie Rojas each had one.
Saint Mary's outshot Cal Poly 12-11, while the Mustangs earned eight corner kicks compared to the Gaels' three. Sophomore goalkeeper Samuel Mackenzie, who secured four shutouts over eight appearances last season, grabbed eight saves while allowing three goals.
The Mustangs are now 4-7-1 all-time against the Gaels and winless in their last seven season openers.
Cal Poly hosts Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in its home opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two schools and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
