SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- It's done. On time. On budget.
The renovation of the turf inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium was recently completed ahead of schedule and just in time to host Cal Poly's 2022 Spring Commencement this weekend.
The $3.2 million project funded by the university, Cal Poly Corporation and multiple other sources, broke ground in December 2021. Led by Facilities Planning & Capital Projects project manager Brandon Medeiros, the design-build construction team of Maino Construction, GF Garcia & Sons, Harris Architects and DPSI successfully delivered the project with the goal of being done in time for commencement.
"What President Armstrong has done for the Athletics Department has been amazing for me to be a part of and for me to see," said third-year Mustang head football coach Beau Baldwin. "This is another step toward the big picture and what it does for us immediately."
The turf, FieldTurf Super Elite Vertex Prime with CORE 'System,' is a durable two-fiber product designed for excellent long-term performance. Together with the patented FieldTurf '3 Layer' infill mix of sand, sand/rubber and rubber, the Super Elite field has a natural look with excellent ball performance and a system that is backed by long-term independent safety data.
FieldTurf has been installed in such facilities as the National Football League's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Bank of America Stadium, Ford Field, Gillette Stadium and Lumen Field (formerly CenturyLink Field) in Seattle.
"This project provides us with another surface that we can use throughout the week, practice-wise, but also fitting what we're going to do schematically, for recruiting ... really, the big picture of things that will come down the road with facilities and other things we see coming," said Baldwin.
"We couldn't be more pleased with the way it all worked out."
The project's scope included the replacement of existing natural grass with professional grade artificial turf, earthwork and sub-grade preparations, improved field accessibility with new concrete flatwork and curbs, storm drain and sanitary sewer upgrades, new field goals and posts. The earthwork and sub-grade phases leveled the field, adding as much as 2.5 feet of infill to the existing field at the south end of the facility.
Also included were field striping and logos for both football and soccer. In addition to those sports, the field will accommodate rodeo events and general events such as commencement, large gatherings and concerts.
In line with the university's sustainability goals, the new turf will help save nearly 8.5 acre-feet of water per year, or about 2.8 million gallons annually. It will also save countless hours of landscape maintenance over its 15-year life expectancy.
Spanos Stadium, which last fall was the only football facility in the Big Sky Conference still with natural grass, will no longer be able to claim that distinction.
"We're very fortunate to be part of this university and what we're doing," said Baldwin, "and we're so excited to get on that new turf."
