SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite losing the doubles point and being down 2-1 at one point, the Cal Poly men's tennis team rallied to come back and beat UC Davis, 4-3, Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex.
The win for the No. 59 Mustangs (13-4, 4-0 BWC) is their fourth in a row and keeps them unbeaten and in first place the Big West standings.
It was a close match from start to finish, beginning with the doubles. After the Aggies (14-11, 0-3 BWC) won at the No. 3 spot, Cal Poly's No. 1 pair of freshman Bastiaan Weststrate and redshirt sophomore Colter Smith won 6-4 to even it up. The No. 2 spot came down to a tiebreaker, with UC Davis winning it 7-4 to clinch the point.
In singles, sophomore Noah Berry put the Mustangs on the board after winning his match at the No. 1 spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. He has won his last three matches and pushed his team-leading record to 11-4 this year.
UC Davis then won at the No. 2 spot to take a 2-1 lead in the dual before redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca won in straight sets at the No. 4 spot to tie it up.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Keyser, playing in his first match of the season, gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead after he won at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 7-6(5).
The Aggies pulled out a three-set win at the No. 5 spot to tie the dual 3-3, forcing it to come down to Smith in a third set at the No. 3 spot. Leading 5-4 in the third set and up 30-15 in the game, Smith's opponent was assessed a penalty point after being overruled for the third time in the match on an out call by the chair umpire which resulted in Smith winning his match 6-4 and clinch the dual for Cal Poly.
